Final Report on PLN
I continued to use Symbaloo for my PLN and I love it! I never thought I would enjoy making it as much as I did. I have added several blogs to my bookmarks to I can continue to read their blogs without having to do a search for them. I have YouTube, Facebook, iTunes, weather, Amazon, Ebay, my bank account, Blogger. Craigslist and Pandora were defaulted on there but I kept them because I enjoy looking at them both. Using my PLN, will help me do things a lot easier on the Internet and I love it!I wish I knew of more students who blogged so I could read their blogs. That was my favorite part of the class.
I have an iGoogle account also. I love when I am able to control how I use my computer and I am able to set up how I can find things the easiest.

Melville Intermediate - Tutoring with Burham School
I read a post about how one school tutored with another school using the technology in their classroom; I thought this was a really cool post because you get to see what all technology has to offer.

Our New Zealand students geographically are on the other side of the world, nearly at the bottom of the Southern Hemisphere, so for our students to be global citizens is a hugely important task. American culture has a huge influence on our students through media so the country and visitors from the country have a huge impact on our students. Additional Assignment #5
Adventures in Pencil Integration:
John Spencer had a great outlook on education. He cares about and understands students. Using pencils to relate to technology is a great way to get us to read between the lines. He gives different experiences in each post. He is able to see how the world is changing to technology and writes about it in ways his readers can understand.
As we get older, things change. The world has a lot more technology now than when I was in elementary school and now I am commenting on elementary school student's blogs. Students need to learn in ways that they will be educated, not just know it for a week to be tested on then lose it after that week is over.

The Alabama Learning Exchange (ALEX) is a very powerful resource for teachers. You can get lesson plans and resources to use with those lesson plans and just around the classroom. The quote on there homepage say," Quality for Every Fact of Learning," and I think that says it all. There goals is for students to have the best educators and instructors. The material on the ALEX website is listed my subject and grade, which makes it so easy to find. Once you go to a certain subject, it gives the state standards and lesson plans. I feel like I will have to do so many lesson plans when I begin teaching, anything I could find would be very useful. I would refer this website to any of my co-workers or classmates. t and grade level. I think I will use this website plenty in the near future and I will be very thankful that it's available.
Alabama connecting classrooms, educators, and students statewide (ACCESS) is a learning program that provides classroom courses and teachers via technology. There vision: The State of Alabama will provide equal access to high quality instruction to improve student achievement through distance learning. There goal: The goal of the distance learning plan is to create equity through additional educational offerings for all Alabama public high school students. They use video and web-based online courses and it available to all high school students. The courses are taken during the day at the school the student attends. It would be very interesting to be able to come in contact with. I love the idea of it, but I am in elementary education, so it won't be used in the classes I will be teaching.

I will be working with Mattie Bearden on the Final Project. We will be creating a Glogster with online resources for elementary teachers. I think it will be fun to use Glogster and create something on there. I think Mattie is excited, too!

I think the video was really interesting. It really shows the difference and which one would load a webpage faster than the other. When all is said and done, I think they are pretty much the same when it comes to speed. I don't have both, I just have an iPhone and I am very impressed with the speed that comes from it.

I was assigned to read a blog written by Morgan S. she posted about using a cell phone responsibly. She talked about how you shouldn’t waste minutes, don’t bully on it, keep it in a safe place, finish homework before using it, and not responding to unfamiliar numbers. To be in the 6th grade she is aware of what needs to be done before using her phone.

First Graders in Ms. Cassidy's Class
Little Kids... Big Potentials
I loved watching this video. I think he use of technology is smart and it teaches the children how to use the computer and one of the students said that the more they write blogs, the better their spelling gets and if the child is learning and having fun, it's that much better.
Blogs and videos would be what I would use in my classroom. Students learn from seeing something over and over again. Also, I think students learn better by seeing classsmates to something or talk about something. A teach may come across students not completing their blogs or not participating in an activity or video. If students are making a video as a group, it teaches them to work together and plan out what is going to be done.

I read "Infographics- Complie, Present, and Share Information."
The post was about infographics, which are visual representations of a set of data, facts, statistics, and images to support a point of view. It is a cool chart, graphic, image used to compile and sort data. I found the post very interesting and I knew you could put data and information into graphics but I didn't realize how cool and interesting they realy were. There were five examples of infographics in this post and my favorite one was about texting and driving and the dangers of it and which states ban texting while driving.

An Open Letter to Educators by Morgan Bayda
I feel like a lot of my money is going to waste with some of the classes I have taken in college. I know there are thing that have helped but there have been things that have been "taught" that I have known since I was in the 2nd grade! People always talk bad about American education, but for the most part it is true.
I agree with a lot of what Morgan wrote about. She included a lot of good things to thinks about. However, I have not been in that class that lectures for 3 hours and I am required to take notes about something that I will never use from that class. I think I am lucky in that part!
Dan Brown was talking so fast but it was so much information he was throwing out and he is right by saying that for the tests we have to take, we memorize facts that don't really even matter and society could care less how many facts we know.

What do you think is the most important thing Sir Ken Robinson says in this presentation?
He talks about ADHD and how he wasn't qualified to say if there is such thing as ADHD or not. I agree, we don't have the right to tell a parent that their child has the problem or not because we don't even know if it is a real thing. He is right, it is still under debate. "These kids are being medicated as routinely as we had our tonsils taken out."
Is there anything you disagree with in this presentation?
I disagree by him saying that children don't need to start school and only have their age in common. All students need to be the same age, in the same grade, unless they need to stay back because they have been unsuccessful in learning.
How congruent are Sir Ken Robinson's positions with those which you are being taught in the College of Education. In other words, where is there agreement? Where is there disagreement?
All classes are different. There would be plenty of arguments in some of my classes between Sir Ken Robinson's video. We talk about all the ways to be diverse and how we will deal with all different types of diversity in one class and how to modify (change) what we do if a student has a "disability."
What can you do to address the issues Sir Robinson raises?
I could do more research to see if what all he has to say has fact and if not I could inform others and change it.

I think the drawings were awesome, I'm jealous! So, obviously, I would not be the artist. I would probably be the narrator. I could read the story-line (written by someone else) with ease.

What I've Learned This Year
I really enjoyed reading this blog, it gave different things to look at when I become a teacher. All the points made, were great points and were backed up with great explanation. I think the most important point that was made was communication. If there is no communication, there will be no teaching or learning going on. We need to encourage our students to do their best and always do what we can to help them.
Some teachers go in to teaching for the wrong reason, we are there to teach and because we care for the children and education. We shouldn't worry if we are the "cool" teacher or not. We should do whatever it takes to have an educated student.

Richard Miller- This is How We Dream
At the beginning he says that we are in the greatest change in human communication, we can communicate instantly and globally. I believe that I am prepared to write with multimedia and I think i will be able to teach my students to do so. I use technology more than I use books. I want my students to use pen, pencil, and paper because I don't want that o go anywhere.
We need to be able to send our students to the library and look something up in a book and not just look it up in "Google". I love searching different things in the Internet because you get a visual picture of what is being talked about of being searched. I think that using books to look up is much more accurate what you are looking for. He does have an interesting point by saying that we can see change as it happens.
In the second video, he talks about the energy that goes into video's. He says that us as educators must be in the business of sharing ideas, freely. I agree with him about that. We need to be willing to give our ideas to other educators, but they should be willing to revise it.

Loved this one!! I felt the same way when the class began. I was so overwhelmed by all the work we had to do but after actually doing all of it I have really enjoyed the stuff we have done! I watched the video at the beginning of class and remembered it but I watched it again because I enjoyed it that much! The both pretty much point out that it's up to you how well you do in the class. I would put important tolls and information about the class if I had to produce a video for this situation.
Smartboards
The Smartboard isn't that bad! I have enjoyed seeing the be used in classrooms. However, I think that if a school need work done to the school to make the school a better learning environment, that should be done before a Smartboard is purchased. I was observing in a school that was about 60 degrees in the classroom but I had a Smartboard hanging over my head. I just think that the money that went to the Smartboard would have fixed the heat in that classroom which would have made the students learning better rather than the smart board that is probably used 10 times a year.
At the beginning he says that we are in the greatest change in human communication, we can communicate instantly and globally. I believe that I am prepared to write with multimedia and I think i will be able to teach my students to do so. I use technology more than I use books. I want my students to use pen, pencil, and paper because I don't want that o go anywhere.
We need to be able to send our students to the library and look something up in a book and not just look it up in "Google". I love searching different things in the Internet because you get a visual picture of what is being talked about of being searched. I think that using books to look up is much more accurate what you are looking for. He does have an interesting point by saying that we can see change as it happens.
In the second video, he talks about the energy that goes into video's. He says that us as educators must be in the business of sharing ideas, freely. I agree with him about that. We need to be willing to give our ideas to other educators, but they should be willing to revise it.

Project 10: PLN progress report
This is the first PLN I have ever created. I am creating my PLN by using symbaloo. It is really neat how it works and how much you can do with it. I have read how to set it up look forward to finishing it. I never thought I would get use out PLNs, but after watching the &th graders PLN, I know that I will get some use out of it. It will take a little getting used to so I hope it turns out well in the end.

I think that if you are motivated to do anything, that helps you in a lot of the things you do. I still think they need to be taught.

Yes; I still think they need someone there to encourage them though.

I think to learn, you have to be willing to do it. You can't just sit someone down and they automatically learn, they have to want to.

GOOGLE! I Google everything, if someone is teaching them self they can look up a "how to" on something.

I definitely go home and review some stuff. I have one class this semester that I have to go home and review everything the teacher says and go over stuff in the book because she didn't do it very well.

Blog 7
Randy Pausch's Last Lecture
In Randy Pausch's Last Lecture he talks about methods he used as a teacher. He talks about the goals he had growing up and lesson he learned at the beginning of the lecture. He was so "alive" to be in the situation he was in and the way he had such a positive outlook on life and an awesome thing. He knew he didn't have much time left and he took life as it came to him. If I were in his situation, there is no way I could have stood up there and been as positive as he was.
One point Randy Pausch made was about coming up on brick walls. He said that brick walls are there to let us prove how much we want something. He has come to a lot of brick walls in his left, but he didn't let them get in the way. He climbed them and still embraced life. He said "anything is possible" after seeing the man on the moon and then he realized that he could do anything. When he was talking about his childhood football coach he mentioned how the coach stuck with pushing him and that if he hadn’t continued to push him then that would have meant he had given up on him.
I believe teachers need to push students to succeed in everything they do. If one of my students wants to be president one day, I should encourage them and help them in any way possible and never try to change their mind. A lot of teacher may tell their students that their goals and dreams are bad ideas and they may need a new idea and students will become discouraged. Some teachers just lose hope and give up.
I really enjoyed watching this video and this is by far my favorite video. It has really opened my eyes to believing that anything is possible and it came from a man who was dying. This video made me tear up at the thought that anything can happen when you don't even realize it. His story really touches me and if it doesn't open others eyes and touch them, they're crazy. It is sad that this (cancer) had to happen to such an inspirational man.

C4T #2 Summary
I was assigned to Mr. David Hopkins. The name of his blog is "eLearning Blog Don't Waste Your Time." In Mr. Hopkins post "Infographic: Online Education & Learning", he mainly talked about education online. I posted the following on his blog: "Online education is becoming very important in schools. Cost is cheaper and it also make it more interesting to learn and also see how others are learning all over the world through the internet. Blog 6
1. The Networked Student
I think this networked student and I am doing the same type of thing right now. I can and have done some of the same things he has done. It is amazing that we can see a professors lessons from all over the world and from the finest universities in the world.
Teachers are needed, like it was mentioned, they are the one's who inform us of all the things we can do with the things we learn and they are the one's who present us with all the knowledge we need to use such things, as technology. I think we need a teacher around so we have someone to talk to and someone who we can ask our questions to.
I enjoyed this video, it made me realize some of the things I could be doing in my classroom when I start teaching. I just have to push them to use technology and teach them the importance of it and all the ways it may be used.
2. A 7th Graders PLN
I am amazed by this 7th graders PLN. She has it so much more advanced than I did when I was her age. She has learned things in her 7 or 8 years of school than I learned in my 13 years. I knew how to use the "basics" before this class but she has so much knowledge for a kid. Good for her!!
3. The Machine is Changing Us
This was a very entertaining video. When I saw 33 minutes, I thought I would be bored right away after 5 minutes but I really enjoy watching him and the video. I don't use a lot of current technology, like Skype or YouTube, I just got an iPhone and I feel behind. I will need to be involved in most of the current websites and technology because I will have students in that generation and I will need to know what they are interested in.

1. The Benefits of Podcasting in the Classroom
I found this video pretty interesting and I enjoyed watching it. I thought it was cool how I could hear the students and teachers and showed the classroom. Podcasts are probably really enjoyable for the students because they get to use such up-to-date technology and show what they have used it for.
I think the video was very useful and full of information. Students may be more willing to do homework or classwork, if they have something like podcasts to use. They used a sick child to show one of the benefits of podcasting, which is such a good idea and a goo way for a student to not miss school work if they are out school. It may make a student think they could miss school just because they have a podcast to watch to stay caught up on what is going on with class. The discussion that goes on in the classroom is really important to the learning process, because we learn from our classmates and what they have to say.
2. 100 Ways to Use Your iPod to Learn and Study Better
I think using iPod's are a very good way to learn and study better because there are so many different things you can do with iPod's. There are so many applications you can download to help you study and get more involved. The 100 things that were listed are really interesting. I have used some and there are some I have never heard of. I actually "clicked" on some to see what they were all about.
3. Eagles’ Nest Radio & Class Blog
What neat blogs! The kids are so excited to be learning about the different things and made a video about it. They seemed to really enjoy interviewing Mr. Ward about the sharks. I really wish that when I was in elementary school we could have dome some of the things that students now have the ability to do.

1. Don't Teach Your Kids This Stuff. Please?
Scott McLeod's current teaching role is as an Associate Professor of Educational Administration at Iowa State University and the Director of the UCEA Center for the Advanced Study of Technology Leadership in Education (CASTLE). He is also the creator of Did You Know? Shifthappens videos. My comment to Mr. McLeod's post was as follows: "Dr. McLeod, I am reading your post as an assignment for Dr. Strange's EDM 310 class at USA. You're post was interesting, although, I don't fully agree with the whole thing. I had a cell phone at a young age, but that was only because my mom didn't like to give up hers when we went places and I didn't stay around her or when I stayed at a friends house, she didn't want to call their house phone, so she just got me my own phone. I agree with the social networking thing though. I get friends requests on Facebook from kids who are 8 and 9 years old! That is way too young. For a while you had to have an .edu email address to have a Facebook, now anyone of any age can have one. Nice and fun post! You can check out my blog: www.hyattcarynedm310.blogspot.com".
2. The iSchool Initiative
The idea of the iSchool is rather exciting and the video was quite entertaining! My sister-in-law is in nursing school, here at South, and they have required her to have an iPod touch for some of the work she will have to do. I doubt her iPod replaces her books, but they said they will use it in the hospitals. I think iSchool would be a great way to prepare students for college and life after college! It puts the world at a students fingertips.
As a student, having to buy school book or a graphing calculator, it would have been awesome to have saved on the books and calculator and just downloaded the application on to my iPod. iSchool seems so full life! Maybe, when I become a teacher, iSchool will be around and I will be able to enjoy the upgrade and technology with my students.
3. The Lost Generation
When the first part of the video was over, I was in shock. There was some truth to what was said, it was scary! Divorce is so powerful these day, it's unreal. We are so quick to assume that people are divorced or that child come from divorced parents. People who are divorced shouldn't celebrate it. It seems that our world is coming to nothing and it is hurtful! I'm so glad she was able to reverse everything she said and make it to fit her. It is wonderful, that she know the importance of her job, but more importantly, her family. Family should always come first in anyones life!

What a cool video! I never realized how the internet could link us all together and this was a great way to show it. Who would have known that something like this could be done through so many people over the internet? I don't know that I would ever want the world to come down to just communication through the internet but it could happen.

Additional Assignment #1
I have had to do projects in high school where I had to map countries, draw their flag, state population, and other certain information about the country. These would have been nice tools to know about when I was doing these projects.
I have never heard of Google Squared or Wolfram Alpha before this assignment.
I never realized you could do so much with statistics, but you really do use them everywhere you go, they are all around you.
The story in your "Food for Thought" post was a really cool story and it made me realize that even one's who don't have much and who have never use an iPad or other piece of technology, still have the capability to work them.

1. A Vision of Students Today
The video proves a major point. There really aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything we need to do. I don’t take my laptop to class because I know I will be tempted to get on Facebook or try to finish up another teacher’s homework before time for that class.
There is nothing I can do about to problems we are facing in the world, but I do live here and I do have to encounter everything that goes on. Although, it is a very scary world we live in. If only, those desks and walls could talk, they would probably have so much to say. They see it all. Everything people do, in classrooms and in hallways.
2. It's not about the Technology
I agree with Ms. Hines in so many of her points! I have seen some of these thousands of dollar machine and technologies not being used at all. But if they are not helping the student learn, then they are pointless to even turn on. She is right by saying that “learning is the product of a successful day.” We have to be willing to go over something time and time again to make sure every student understands.
I have learned so much from Dr. Strange that I never knew existed. I enjoy all the new tools I have had to download and all the sites I have had to join. Ms. Hines also pointed out that teachers must be learners too. They have to learn from all aspects of life; their students, co-workers, and friends.
3. Is It Okay To Be A Technology Illiterate Teacher?
What exactly is technology illiterate? If I don’t know how to use a Smart Board, does that make me technology illiterate? That’s about all I can do right now, although, I am learning how to use the latest pieces of technology. It is important for us to know how to use the latest technology. If we don’t, our students will learn somewhere else and one day be teaching us how to use some things.

I have learned so much from Dr. Strange that I never knew existed. I enjoy all the new tools I have had to download and all the sites I have had to join. Ms. Hines also pointed out that teachers must be learners too. They have to learn from all aspects of life; their students, co-workers, and friends.
3. Is It Okay To Be A Technology Illiterate Teacher?
What exactly is technology illiterate? If I don’t know how to use a Smart Board, does that make me technology illiterate? That’s about all I can do right now, although, I am learning how to use the latest pieces of technology. It is important for us to know how to use the latest technology. If we don’t, our students will learn somewhere else and one day be teaching us how to use some things.
I think everyone needs to know how to use at least the basics of technology. I mean, that is what the world is coming to. I’m not sure how I feel about the world coming to only technology but it is coming and we need to learn as much as possible before it all comes down to it.

Blog 2
1. Did you know?
Wow! It is a scary thought that the students I teach, one day, will most likely know more than I know in the world of technology. This video was not only very informational, it was kind of depressing. It’s weird to think that my child will probably never have a book, probably just a Kindle or another electronic reading device.
Teachers really need to stay up-to-date on technology because that will be our way of teaching our students. One day, something bigger than Facebook and MySpace will probably be out. Students are being taught on Smart Boards, when I was in elementary school, we had a chalk board, and if we were lucky, a dry erase board.
It is interesting that one day, we will all be connected through a computer, phone, iPod, iPad, or some other type of technology. My mother has no clue about computers and cell phones, only how to turn the computer on and make a phone call on her cell phone.
2. Mr. Winkle Wakes
If I were asleep for the next 100 years, I could not imagine what all would happen while I was asleep. Every time some new piece of technology comes out, I feel like Mr. Winkle. Everywhere we turn around, something new is out there for us to figure out. My grandparents do not own a computer nor do they even have cable or satellite. They have grown up with pen and paper. For the most part, they are completely clueless about any new technology.
It is surprising that with all the technology that we can’t stop terrorism or put a cap on the oil that is leaking in the gulf, but we can put a man on the moon, 40 years ago, without everything we have now.
It doesn't take much time, not even close to 100 years, to miss out on something that has recently come out. I was completely clueless when the iPod and iPhone came out. I have an iPod and I am still amazed with how much it can do and how it can still be updated to do more than it aleady does.
3. Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts
On one of the clips from the video, it had something about a 14 year old blogging.. When I was 14, I had no clue what a blog was! It is amazing how far things have come since I was a "kid". It really is amazing though! One day, school may be a part of the past and everything is done at home on a computer. We can pretty much travel all over the world in the simple little box.
Knowing how to do these things are very exciting. There is a wide variety of the tools that are in a computer. The hard part is probably going to be staying up-to-date. We won't always have a Dr. Strange or a Vicki Davis there to show how something works or to give us the latest updates. Our students will probably learn before us and they will be teaching us!
4. The Importance of Creativity
I really enjoyed Sir Ken Robinson as a speaker. Funny jokes! His opinion on creativity was wonderful. Being creative is a fun part of life.It will make my classroom full of students more exciting and entertaining. The God story he told was a wonderful example of creativity.
When people are able to be creative, it makes life so much more wonderful! Being creative is a very important of a child's life and having a teach who will allow it would made their time in elementary school more fun and exciting. I think this video is something everyone should watch, at least once.

About Me- Caryn Hyatt
My name is Caryn Hyatt. I am 20 years old, I will be 21 in January. I am the youngest of 6 kids; 4 boys and 2 girls. Big family, I know. I have 4 nieces and 2 nephews. My dad died when I 11 yeas old. I have lived in Grand Bay my whole life. I have an incredible boyfriend, if we get married, hopefully we will stay in Grand Bay, I love it there.
My major is Elementary Education because I love kids. Nothing would make me happier than to help a child learn. I have always wanted to be a teacher, ever since I was a kid. I went to Faulkner my first two years of college, I really enjoyed it. I chose to come to USA because it is so close to home and I didn't want to move away from my mom.
I work at Eddie's Pawn Shop, I have worked there for a little over three years. I mainly just cash checks, which gives me time to do homework, get on facebook, etc. I go to Friendship Baptist Church. I teach 4 year olds in Sunday School, they are some pretty awesome kids! I love going to my college bible study there, also. That is how I spend most of my time when I am not at school. I have a pretty plain life, but I love it and wouldn't want it any other way.
